The Story Behind My Angel Wing Cuff

Sometimes an original jewelry design begins with a sketch.

This one began with something I couldn't bring myself to throw away.

While making my silver angel wing earrings, I stamp the wing shapes from silver. After the wings are removed, beautiful silver angel wing frame pieces remain.

Technically, they were leftovers.

But every time I looked at them, I saw something more.

I had already spent time working with that silver, and the shapes left behind had an interesting beauty of their own. Instead of tossing them into my scrap pile, I began imagining how I could give them an entirely new purpose.

And that's how my Copper & Silver Sculpted Angel Wing Cuff was born.

🪽 An Original Alexa Martha Design

I wanted the silver frames to become the focal point of a completely different piece of jewelry.

I begin each cuff with a 6-inch strip of heavy 14-gauge copper, approximately 5/8 inch wide. I file and round the ends by hand before taking several different hammers to the copper.

🔨 Each hammer leaves its own pattern and character in the metal.

Once I'm happy with the texture, I solder the leftover silver angel wing frame pieces directly onto the copper.

That's when the cuff really begins to come alive.

I sculpt the metal into the dimensional cuff shape you see in the finished piece. For the crystal version, I add three super-sparkly flat Swarovski crystals along the edges of the silver wings.

For those who prefer something more understated, I also make the cuff without crystals. The stone-free version has a strong, clean look that works beautifully as a men's cuff as well.

🔥 The Finish Brings Everything Together

Once the construction is complete, the entire cuff is antiqued.

Then comes one of my favorite parts.

I sand the surface again, allowing the raised hammered patterns to emerge while the darker antiquing remains in the recessed areas. That contrast brings out all those little details created by the different hammers.

The cuff is then polished and finally waxed to help protect the finish for long-lasting enjoyment.

What you see when it's finished isn't a surface pattern created by a machine.

Those marks came from my hammers and my hands.

❤️ No Two Cuffs Are Exactly Alike

That's something I especially want people to understand about my jewelry.

I don't have a factory producing hundreds of identical bracelets.

I am the designer. And I am the maker.

Because I hammer, solder, sculpt, antique, sand and finish these cuffs individually, no two will ever be exactly alike.

 The hammer marks vary.
 The silver frames vary.                                                                                                           The direction of the silver angel wing frames varies.                                                                 The patina develops differently.
 The sculpting has its own character.

Those little differences aren't imperfections.

They're the fingerprints of Alexa Martha Designs.

The cuff you receive will be your cuff.

♻️ Finding Beauty in What Was Left Behind

Perhaps my favorite part of this design is where it began.

The silver frames could easily have been considered scrap after I stamped out my angel wing earrings.

Instead, they became the inspiration for another piece of jewelry.

There is something I love about that idea: something doesn't lose its beauty or value simply because its original purpose is finished. Sometimes it is just waiting for its second story.

That's exactly what happened here.

Silver that was left behind became the heart of an entirely new Alexa Martha design.

And now, instead of ending up in my scrap pile, those little silver frames get to leave my Montana studio as something meant to be worn and enjoyed.

Every Copper & Silver Sculpted Angel Wing Cuff is designed and handcrafted by me in my Montana studio.

The approximately 6-inch cuff is designed to fit a 6½–7 inch wrist and is available only here and only in the quantities I make.

There is no mass production behind it.

Just metal, fire, hammers, a little sparkle—and a jewelry designer who saw something beautiful in what was left behind.
