Jewelry Care

You might like to know how to take care of your  silver, copper and gold filled jewelry you have purchased at Lexi Butler Designs. Here are some helpful tips and explanations.

How to take care of Gold Filled Jewelry

First off Gold filled jewelry is not the same as gold plated jewelry.

Just as gold-plated jewelry is plated with gold, gold-filled jewelry is as well, but there is a big difference between the ways these products are made. Gold-filled items have a much thicker layer of gold on them, and the gold is a much higher quality. ... You can't say the same about gold-plated jewelry.

What is Gold-Filled? Gold-filled is a United States layered gold product that is gaining popularity throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe. It is a quality material that is common in all types of jewelry. The product is easy to care for and will usually maintain its golden shine for a lifetime.

Gold-filled is constructed in two or three layers. The core metal is jewelers’ brass. A gold alloy is then bonded to one or both surfaces of the brass core with heat and pressure. Unlike plated (aka electroplated or "dipped") metals, Gold-filled is legally required to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. This 5% is then described by the karatage of the gold alloy. Our Gold-filled items are 14kt gold-filled. 14k Gold-filled products are identified as 14/20 Gold-filled; alternatively, 14kt Gold-Filled is also acceptable. You will only find gold-filled components in Lexi Butler Designs Jewelry.

So, What is Gold Plate? – Gold plating is a miniscule layer of solid gold applied to a brass base. The plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the products total weight. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will generally wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product. It does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time.

Care and Cleaning

Gold-filled does not de-laminate or peel like plated or "dipped" products. Nor does it tarnish as readily as silver. Many owners find that they never have to clean gold-filled items at all. However, from time to time your jewelry may become dirty from everyday wear. To clean gold-filled it is best to use mild soap and water. Hot weather and water will not damage the material.

Use only warm water and a mild soap-based detergent to clean your jewelry. Soak your jewelry pieces for a minute in the water. If you have to scrub, use a soft baby toothbrush and be gentle. Never use tissue or any other paper-based material to clean the pieces. Always pat the jewelry dry and let it completely dry on the air.

Sterling Silver is a very easy to care for metal if you keep up on it. We always recommend using just a polishing cloth made for sterling silver . It has a dry chemical inside of the cloth to remove any oxidation or tarnish that gets on the jewelry. We never recommend using liquid cleaners unless the item is extremely tarnished.

If you have to use a liquid cleaner do not leave in cleaner for more than a few seconds. We recommend rinsing with distilled water after a liquid cleaner is used. Always use a professional polishing cloth afterwards to put a polish, or protective coating back on the jewelry, otherwise it will just yellow and tarish within a matter of days. If not wearing or displaying items, always store in zip-lock plastic baggies.

How to take care of your copper jewelry purchased at Lexi Butler Designs
Before you put any jewelry from Lexi Butler Designs on, be aware, that the materials we use are either bare copper, bare brass, sterling silver or silver filled. All of our jewelry when possible is protected with a hypoallergenic coating to prevent tarnishing.
However it is advisable to make  sure any lotions and/or perfumes are absorbed into your skin before you wear any jewelry. Apply all hair products, especially hair spray, before you put on the jewelry. hairspray leaves a fine residue on jewelry and becomes an irremovable coating over time.
Remove your jewelry before swimming in chlorinated or salty water, an invigorating workout and prior to bedtime. When you remove your jewelry at the end of your day, take a couple of minutes to wipe it off with a jewelry cloth with a soft cloth.  Never use tissues or paper towels for your jewelry bought from Lexi Butler Designs. These products will only scratch the jewelry, which will detract from the beauty of the pieces. Do not use polishing cloths or other cleaning agents such as pastes or jewelry cleaners on your jewelry purchased at Lexi Butler Designs. Likewise do not emerge your jewelry in water for a prolonged time.

If you live in a humid place we encourage you so always store your beautiful jewelry in a dry dark place when you are not wearing it.. Always take off your jewelry before swimming, showering or cleaning. The water and chemicals used during these activities could cause the item to become dull, or the coating could come off in spots..

Certain medication can turn your skin green, but we are preventing this from happening, by coating our jewelry. How ever, all pieces of jewelry like movable parts can not be coated. For example copper wire wrapped links of a chain, for this would make the chain stiff. All wire used in necklace that are part of a chain have a factory anti tarnish coat on and is most likely not to tarnish your skin. We encourage you to buy copper jewelry as it has many benefiting health aspects, of course non of which are proven, but only experienced buy other customers as well as the designer herself.
Lexi Butler Designs Guarantees, that the ordered copper product will leave our company in impeccable condition.
We urge our customers to read the included care sheet, so they will enjpy the copper jewelry for a long time to come.
